  • Overview

    Equestrian is a sport in which athletes compete in terms of the accuracy and artistic quality of performance achieved through the rider/horse combination.Equestrian includes three disciplines: Individual Test and Team Test to Music, in which compulsory exercises are performed; and Freestyle Test, in which athletes perform to music selected by themselves.

    Athletes are classified into five classes according to the type and extent of their impairment. For individuals, riders within a designated classification compete against each other. For teams, on the other hand, a team is assembled regardless of classification.

    Equestrian athletes are obliged to wear a jacket, helmet, equestrian boots, and gloves. Horses are to be equipped with a saddle, the reins and other accessories. In cases where standard horse tack may cause inconvenience or safety issues to athletes due to their impairment, the use of special horse tack, which has undergone improvements to cover the shortcomings of the standard tack, is allowed.

    History

    Horse riding for persons with an impairment was originally developed for the purpose of rehabilitation. In ancient Greece, horse riding was utilized for rehabilitation for injured war veterans; and in the 20th century, it began to be used as part of physical therapy.

    Equestrian was introduced for the first time at the Stoke Mandeville & New York 1984 Paralympic Games, and has been an official sport since the Atlanta 1996 Paralympic Games.
