      Overview
      Football matches involve two teams of 11 players.
      Players move a ball to the other team's goal by kicking or heading the ball with the aim of scoring a goal. Only the goalkeeper is permitted to touch the ball his/her hands, and only in the penalty area.

      Duration of a match: 90 minutes (two 45-minute halves)

      Football is one of the most popular sports in the world, played by over 250 million players in more than 200 countries and regions.

      Key Points

      Qualification berths for the Olympic Games are allocated to each continent. In men’s football, sixteen qualified teams are allocated to four groups (A, B, C, and D), and play group stage matches. The top two teams of each group advance to the quarterfinal stage.

      In women’s football, twelve qualified teams are allocated to three groups (E, F, and G), and play group stage matches. The top two teams as well as the best two teams from the top three teams of each group advance to the quarterfinal stage.

      Mens’ and women’s teams play a knockout tournament in the quarterfinal. If a match is drawn after 90 minutes, the teams will play extra time (two periods of 15 minutes each). If the scores are level at the end of extra time, the two teams take part in a penalty shoot-out to determine which team progresses to the next round. As for the third-place match, the teams will take part in a penalty shoot-out, but not playing extra time, to determine the winner, if the match takes place at the same day at the same stadium with the final stage.

      History

      Due to its simplicity, it is believed that various forms of football existed in several ancient civilisations.

      The origin of modern football dates back to Britain the 19th century when the representatives of football clubs across England met to establish common rules and associations.

      Football was played as a demonstration sport at the Athens 1896 Olympic Games and later Games, and made its debut as an official Olympic sport at the London 1908 Games. In the 1970s, women(s football began to increase in popularity, especially in North America and Northern Europe. Women's football was first introduced as an official Olympic sport at the Atlanta 1996 Games.
