  • Overview

Cycling at the Paralympic Games is roughly divided into two types. One is road cycling on outdoor public roads, consisting of time trials, road races, and team relays. As these races are held outdoors, weather and road conditions significantly affect the outcomes.

The other type is track cycling held in an indoor stadium, or velodrome. In track cycling, races are held on an inclined circuit called a “bank.” Individual pursuit, time trials, tandem sprint, team sprint, and scratch races are included in track cycling. The speed of racing bikes reaches up to 60km per hour - some three to four times faster than the average cyclist. Watching cycling racing at such high speeds can be a powerful experience.

Cycling is classified according to the type of bike to be used (four types).

    History

Cycling became an official Paralympic sport for the first time at the Stoke Mandeville & New York 1984 Paralympic Games. At first, only outdoor road races were held. The discipline of track cycling (indoor races) was newly adopted at the Atlanta 1996 Paralympic Games.
