Athletes in a wheelchair use a sport-specific wheelchair called a "racer." Lower limb amputees use a sport-specific prosthetic limb. Visually impaired athletes run with a guide runner to enable them to run toward a goal safely.

Each discipline is divided into many classes according to the type and the extent of athletes' impairments, providing fair and equitable competition among athletes with similar impairments.
