Key Points
Athletics embodies the Olympic motto “Citius, Altius, Fortius”(faster, higher, stronger), the basics of sporting events.
Athletics is a collection of many events including field events such as the hammer throw and high jump; and track events including short, middle and long distance running, hurdles and steeplechases. Some events also use public roads such as the marathon and race walking competitions.History
Running was the first event contested in the ancient Olympic Games, which were held before the Common Era. In the stadion, the only event contested at the time, runners sprinted for the length of the stadium (1 stadion = approximately 191 m). Some of the athletic sports have remain unchanged for thousands of years and are still practised today. The women's marathon, a popular event with Japanese fans, was first included as an Olympic sport at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games.
Japanese athletes first took part in the Olympics during the Stockholm 1912 Games. In the Amsterdam 1928 Olympic Games, Mikio Oda won the triple jump and earned Japan's first ever gold medal. During the same Games, Kinue Hitomi won the silver medal in the women's 800 metres.
